The Interaction of Books and Multimedia: Some Thoughts for Authors
Those authors who published books as recently as five years ago understood the world of word-processing and knew how to engage readers and learners through the use of words. Such skills are still critical in successful writing, but today's author also must know how to interact with multimedia environments if he/she desires maximum learning from readers. This paper presentation provides an overview of educational textbooks widely used in today's market, and it illustrates the dramatic rise in books with multimedia accessories or supplements. DVDs, CDs, and significant use of web resources are included in a high percentage of successful publications. The learning environment for readers is being enhanced through these inclusions, but some authors are being left behind. The paper will illustrate resources for authors to consider, and it will compare/contrast the content of books utilizing multimedia supplements with the contents of books that have been exclusively word-processed. The result will be a clearer understanding for authors and publishers alike of the need for interacting books and multimedia.
