What Is Our Future: The Codex and/or Electronic Media?
This presentation addresses the role of the codex in contemporary and future societies. Librarians and archivists, throughout the world, are engaged in an on-going debate on the survival of the codex. The session provides insight and complexity into this discourse. The codex and electronic media are examined as objects of wisdom, artefacts and holders of social memory. Marshall and Eric McLuhan’s Laws of the Media are utilised in the multifaceted evaluation. Extensive research in North America and Europe, and from his lecturing in the Academy. He has developed graduate programmes in Library and Information Studies, utilising both the traditional codex and current electronic resources. He has intellectually integrated these technologies, and envisions a future that is not polarised by a single medium.
