Inferences for the Greek Publishing Industry through the Analysis of Market Data
The publishing market is influenced by a number of issues including technological, social, economic and cultural trends. The Greek publishing industry is distinct and rather representative of the small publishing markets in Europe. In this paper, the traditional features as well as contemporary trends, demonstrating the characteristics of the Greek publishing industry, are exhibited. Furthermore, recent data and market information of the Greek publishing industry are presented and analyzed. The above mentioned analysis is forming the basis for the Greek publishing market study in relation to a. the work of the Greek publishers and editors (development of catalogues and of book policy, criteria of title selection, relationship with the authors, promotion strategies), b. prospects and opportunities of small and specialized presses (entry point, book production, co-operations, market analysis, competition) c. perceptions of the Greek publishers in relation to Open Access (affected by the university Repositories and Electronic Thesis and Dissertations Library Management, issues for competition and cooperation of academic libraries, copyrights). Finally, some comparisons with other European national small markets are made. In Greece, due to the restricted library information services provision, the publishing industry is indeed playing a significant role influencing information dissemination, scholar communication, reading behaviour and the development of future professionals.
